In order to have a productive work environment, it is essential to have happy, healthy employees. Studies have shown that a positive work environment leads to higher worker productivity, and higher employee retention.
A strong wellness program is a great way to start, but additional, one-on-one attention can go a long way towards increasing individual employees’ productivity.
Let’s do the math. Suppose you have an employee who comes to work tired all the time. They are unhealthy, and it takes them longer to do work than you think it should. Among their problems is a lack of sufficient sleep, caused, in part, by poor dietary habits and a lack of exercise.
According to WebMD, reducing your nighttime sleep by as little as one and a half hours for just one night could result in a reduction of daytime alertness by as much as 32%. If, for example, that employee would operate at an average of 90% of their peak mental efficiency during the course of their work day when rested, that would drop their efficiency to 61%. That means it would take them over 10 hours to complete the amount of work they could get done in 7 hours when rested. Just correcting that one problem would result in an increase in productivity of 3 hours per day. Is that worth something to you?
