With proper focus and concentration, if you visualize something in your mind clearly and concisely, your brain can not decipher whether it is real or imagined. This applies to sports, business – pretty much anything.
Take Air Force Colonel George Hall, for example. Hall was a POW during the Viet Nam War, and spent seven grueling years locked in a dark cell in North Vietnam. An avid golfer, every day he envisioned himself playing a full round of gold. He would see in his mind every minute detail. He would choose his club, evaluate the course, go through all his normal pre-shot rituals, and see himself in top physical condition, taking each swing. One week after he was released, despite being extremely poor health from his imprisonment he entered the Greater New Orleans Open, and shot a 76.
There are numerous other stories, including those of holocaust victims, who “tricked” their minds into believing they were in places and situations other than those they actual were.
So, how can this help in every day life? Well, let’s suppose you have a job interview or a sales pitch. After you’ve written down all possible Question and Answer scenarios, and prepared yourself for each, visualizing yourself actually there, in front of the person you are meeting with, going through each Q&A, picturing yourself “performing” with confidence, will allow yourself to enter into the actual situation with confidence, because you already went through each scenario in your mind, thereby achieving far greater success.
Visualization techniques are used frequently in sports as well, improving golf scores, bio-mechanics of movement, and focus. They are also used in guided meditations, allowing students to see better versions of themselves with detail and clarity, thereby making higher aspirations a reality.
